One of the most meaningful ways we build connection in a relationship is by staying curious about our partner’s inner world. Sometimes, that means asking questions we might not think to ask.
“What’s something you wish I noticed about you more often?”
It sounds simple, but the answer can reveal quite a bit.
Your partner might tell you about something they’ve been carrying emotionally. They might share an accomplishment they’re proud of, an effort they feel has gone unnoticed, or a need they haven’t known how to communicate.
They might even surprise you.
Why this question matters
Over time, couples can become very familiar with one another while simultaneously becoming less curious.
You may know your partner’s routines, preferences, responsibilities, and schedule. That doesn’t necessarily mean you know what is happening inside their emotional world right now.
People change. Their stressors change. Their hopes change. Their insecurities change. Their priorities change.
Be intentional about continuing to update your understanding of the person you’re sharing your life with.
Sometimes, what your partner most wants is to feel seen.
How to ask the question
Choose a time when you aren’t already arguing or rushing somewhere.
Ask:
“What’s something you wish I noticed about you more often?”
Then listen.
Try not to immediately defend yourself with:
“I do notice that.”
Or:
“I didn’t know you felt that way.”
Or:
“But I’ve been so busy too.”
Even if those thoughts are understandable, they can shift the conversation away from your partner’s experience.
Instead, try:
“Tell me more.”
“I didn’t realize that was important to you.”
“What would feeling more noticed look like?”
“Thank you for telling me.”
You don’t have to agree with every interpretation your partner has. You don’t have to immediately know what to do differently. The first step is understanding.
Connection often lives in the details
Healthy relationships aren’t built solely through grand romantic gestures.
Sometimes connection looks like noticing that your partner has been unusually quiet.
Remembering something they’ve been looking forward to.
Recognizing the effort they’re putting into something.
Asking about the thing they’ve been worried about.
Celebrating something they’re proud of, even if it seems small.
Being curious about who they’re becoming.
The person you fell in love with is still changing, so keep getting to know them.
This week, ask your partner:
“What’s something you wish I noticed about you more often?”
Then listen with curiosity.
